Why annual cleaning

The 3-minute mini-split mold problem

Mini-split heat pumps circulate indoor air through a coil and blower wheel hundreds of times a day. Over a year, that surface collects dust, pet dander, cooking grease, mold, and biofilm. Filter cleaning gets the easy 5 percent. The rest sits behind the front cover, slowly choking efficiency, raising your electric bill, and putting whatever it grows back into your air. Annual deep cleaning is the only fix. Every major manufacturer recommends it. Most Vermont homeowners do not realize it is a service that exists, which is part of why Vermont Heat Pump Cleaning was built.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my heat pump in Vermont?

Once a year. Vermont mini-splits run hard through long winters and humid summers, which makes annual deep cleaning the standard for both efficiency and air quality. Filter cleaning every month or two is helpful but not enough on its own. The blower wheel, coil, and drain pan need to be deep cleaned annually, which requires partial disassembly and a pressurized rinse.

How much does heat pump cleaning cost in Vermont?

$199 for the first indoor unit and $149 for each additional unit. A typical Vermont home with two indoor heads costs $348. There is no travel charge within our service area. We also clean HRV/ERV systems, dryer vents, bathroom vents, and range hood vents for $99 each as an add-on or $149 standalone.

Do you clean Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, and other brands?

Yes. We service every major brand sold in Vermont, including Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Mr. Cool, Daikin, LG, Senville, Bosch, Gree, Pioneer, Carrier, Trane, and Samsung. Our technicians are trained on the disassembly procedures for each brand's common models.

What's included in a heat pump cleaning?

Disassembly of each indoor unit, deep cleaning of the blower wheel, pressurized rinse of the indoor coil, cleaning of the drain pan and condensate line, cleaning of the outdoor coil, and a full system test in both heat and cool modes. Most cleanings take 60 to 90 minutes per indoor unit.

How long does a heat pump cleaning take?

60 to 90 minutes per indoor unit. A two-head system typically takes about two hours total. We work cleanly and leave drop cloths down through the whole job.

Can I clean my heat pump myself?

You can wash the filters and wipe the front cover. You should not attempt the deep clean. Doing it right requires partial disassembly, a bib kit to contain pressurized rinse water, and the right cleaning chemistry to avoid coil damage. Using the wrong chemicals can void your warranty.

Why do mini-splits in Vermont get moldy?

Two reasons. In summer, mini-splits run in cooling mode and produce condensation on the coil. In winter, they run in heating mode and dry out, but mold spores in the system have already taken hold. Vermont's swing between humid summers and long winters makes this cycle worse than in drier climates. Annual cleaning is the only durable fix.

What towns in Vermont do you serve?

We serve Vermont statewide. Our most-requested service areas are Burlington, South Burlington, Colchester, Essex, Rutland, Bennington, Brattleboro, Montpelier, Williston, Middlebury, and Stowe, along with most surrounding towns. See our service area map for full coverage.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We carry general liability and workers compensation insurance. Specific insurance carrier details are on our about page.

Do you offer maintenance plans?

Yes. Our twice-yearly maintenance plan is $279 for a single-unit home or $379 to $479 for two to four indoor units. The plan includes two visits per year (every six months): a full cleaning in spring and a filter and drain check in fall, with priority scheduling.
